At Buttercross Estates, we know how frustrating it can be when your boiler stops working – especially during colder months. Here are a few simple checks you can try before getting a gas engineer out. These steps can often resolve minor issues quickly and safely.

1. Check for Any Error Codes and Refer to Your Instruction Manual

• Look at your boiler’s display panel for any flashing lights, numbers, or letters – these are error codes that can help identify the issue.
• Refer to your boiler’s instruction manual to understand what the code means. Some issues may be resolved with a simple reset or adjustment.
• If you don’t have the manual, search online using your boiler’s make and model – most manufacturers offer downloadable guides.

2. Check the Power Supply

• Is the boiler display completely blank? It might not be receiving power.
• Try switching the boiler off and on at the wall.
• Check your fuse box for any tripped switches – especially the one labelled “boiler” or “heating.”

3. Reset the Boiler

• Most modern boilers have a reset button. If you see an error code or flashing light, press and hold the reset button for 5-10 seconds.
• Wait a few minutes to see if the boiler restarts.
• If the boiler keeps needing resets or shows repeated error codes, this could indicate a deeper issue.

4. Check the Pressure Gauge

• Your boiler’s pressure should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold.
• If it’s below 1, it may need repressurising. Some people feel confident doing this using the filling loop – but if you’re unsure, please contact a gas engineer.

5. Is the Thermostat Set Correctly?

• Make sure your thermostat is turned up and set to “heat.”
• If you use a wireless thermostat, check the batteries – low battery power can prevent it from communicating with the boiler.

6. Check the Timer or Programmer

• Has the clock changed due to daylight saving time?
• Make sure your heating schedule is active and hasn’t been accidentally switched off.

7. Frozen Condensate Pipe (In Cold Weather)

• If it’s freezing outside, the white plastic pipe leading from your boiler to the outside wall may be frozen.
• You can try gently pouring warm (not boiling) water over the pipe to thaw it.

8. Radiators Not Heating Up?

• Try bleeding the radiators if they’re cold at the top but warm at the bottom.
• Use a radiator key and a cloth to catch any drips – turn the key slowly until you hear a hiss, then close it once water starts to come out.
